Stand Against the Wind Carol Harp Norman 9780984431984 Books

"Stand Against the Wind" brings out the strong voice of Lourana Finney as she tells her story of Indian raids, the Civil War, terrible losses and ultimate gains. This novel gives readers an up-close look at every part of this early pioneer-- from Kentucky (by covered wagons), across Tennessee, Arkansas and on into their future home in East Texas. This book is an intimate look from one heroine's point of view. Once you get in the rhythm of Lourana's voice, you won't want to put this book down. This new author, in her debut novel, has a unuque ability to "put us in the story" and we find pride welling up inside, believing that we, too, could stand with this loveable heroine.

If you love history, not fictional history, but true happenings from the past, you will love this novel. It has been lovingly researched and what you read is documented truth. I highly recommend this book for I believe it will challenge you and you'll want to know when the next Carol Harp Norman novel is coming. Soon, I hope. Very soon.

Stand Against the Wind Carol Harp Norman 9780984431984 Books Reviews

I got this book on yesterday and haven't been able to put it down. Stand Against the Wind gives a fresh and honest view of the dilemma of ordinary people caught in the middle of the Civil War. The courage and down-to earth wisdom of this pioneer woman is an inspiration to me.
Great story, especially since I was acquainted with some of the character's names, being from Estill County, KY. There were several places where words were out of place
This is a wonderful book. It was an unusual book as the story was told from a women’s perspective but it was so well done in presenting the culture, hardships and history of the time and the country. My grandmother lived in North Texas for 108 years and in reading the life of Lou and her family coming here and settling this area of our country was special to me. This book shows the true grit of those settlers and the ordeals they overcame to live here and forge the future that was past on to us. The book leave you with a lot of respect for all they went through. As a reader who enjoys western fiction backed factual research this one will stay with me for a long time.
Carol did a fantastic job of weaving the truth with probable tales and possible mishaps as told through letters lovingly passed down in her family. As a genealogist and one who feels `stuck' in the Civil War era ... I loved the family history being intertwined with her good story telling. It was a compelling easy read ... one I found hard to put down, while hating for it to end.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, and I appreciate that most stories in the book derive from documented proof. I cried and I laughed, and at times I became so intrigued with the flowing thoughts and words, that I had to remind myself that I was reading a book, and the book was not my reality. I have lived in Estill County all my life, minus a few month stay in Arlington, Texas, and this book really hit home. This is a pleasurable read that I recommend to any avid reader or history buff. Because of this work of art, I now appreciate my Kentucky home so much more as I view it through the late eyes of Lourana Finney.
As I sit here in the town where Lou was from, Irvine, Ky, and read about what it was like back then and know a lot of the people who are her family that still live here make it even more interesting! I can not say enough about this book and I recommend it to anyone. It tells of a strong woman with strong Biblical values that are needed today. The fact that My wife , Cathy and Myself were blessed to become acquainted with the author and her parents gives an even deeper meaning to the book for us.
I found this book both informative and thoroughly enjoyable. The story of real lives being played out against the historical backdrop was engrossing. The influence of historical events on the families and the consequences of their decisions in response to these events, all based on facts, makes the history much more personal. The author has a wonderful direct writing style giving the protagonist a character which fits her self description. The author hints that she has even more family history to write about but that it was beyond the scope of the current novel. I truly hope to see more from this author.
